DOGWALKING IS FUN AND FRIENDLY
At the Animal Shelter they rely on you, the volunteer, to give the dogs and cats attention, love and socialization. The staff works hard all day to keep the shelter clean, the dogs and cats fed and medicine administered... The Volunteers make sure that the dogs and cats get love, attention and the exercise they need. You need the exercise too!

Daily dog walking routine
Everyday the dogs of the Shelter will be walked in the morning from 8AM-10AM and again in the afternoon if possible, from 3PM-5PM (not in the weekends). You can just stop by when ever you have time. Dog walks are short about 10-15 minutes per dog, to give them the opportunity to do their business. The more volunteers, the better... That means longer walks for the dogs, and the more time they can be out of their small pens... Plus there may be extra time for bathing the dogs and playing with the cats etc...
The staff can assist you at first with getting the dogs out of their pens, until you get used to it.... It is really easy and fun once you get to know them! Just wear clothes and shoes that can get dirty and bring some water to drink! You can call Vijay at 494-9008 for an appointment or just stop by our shelter for the routine walking. You will LOVE IT!!! |
Field trips for dogs
To give the shelter dog a vacation day, you can take one dog at a time for a full day (or half a day) of fun somewhere on Tortola. The purpose of this field trip is to give them a break out of the shelter, some needed exercise, some social interaction with other dogs and humans and maybe to get them adopted or fostered. People tend to fall in love with dogs when they actually meet them.
The process is quite simple. Arrive at the shelter and let them know you want to take out a dog for a field trip. The staff will introduce you to the candidates that are allowed to go out (they must be spayed/neutered already). You choose a dog and the staff gets the dog ready. We provide "Adopt Me" harnesses and leashes, water and a bowl, towels for your car, toys, treats and poop bags. You also can bring a donation tin, business cards from the Humane Society and adoption papers, but that is optional.
The main goal of this program is for you to enjoy Tortola and to get your “dog fix” by taking along one of our shelter dogs on your adventure. Visit our beaches like Cane Garden Bay or bring the dog to Nanny Cay or hike together with the dog anywhere on Tortola. The dog will need to stay on the leash at all times. No exceptions! The shelter will ask you to fill out an evaluation on your return so that potential adopters will know more about the dog. Pictures are encouraged!
Both BVI Residents and Tourists are welcome to participate in this program. Children will need to be accompanied by an adult. To schedule your field trip, please contact Vijay at 494-9008
