HEALTHY FOOD
Two connected elements of responsible pet ownership include providing animals with fresh, cool water and healthy food at all times. The right pet food will enrich your best buddy’s life, providing them with the energy and nutrients they need. With so many meal options to choose from, it can be daunting, but you can become adept in no time by familiarizing yourself with important ingredients and how they help your pup or kitty. When choosing the best cat food, look for a good balance of protein, carbs and fats. These are important ingredients for dog food, too, as is plenty of fiber for the digestive system. In addition to healthy ingredients, select a pet food formula that is appropriate for your pet’s age, health conditions and activity level, and speak to your vet before switching your pet to a specialized food.
HUMAN FOOD CAN CAUSE DIGESTIVE PROBLEMS
Typical human food is much too rich and fatty for a dog to properly digest; eating it can lead to vomiting, diarrhea and even more severe conditions like pancreatitis. Many human foods also contain an unhealthy amount of sodium for dogs. While dogs can eat some human foods, always feed in moderation if at all. Too many treats from the table can throw off your dog’s diet, and it’s always safer to resist the urge and keep the human food for humans. An easy way to practice moderation is to use human food as special treats for special occasions. Some food like blueberries that can double as healthy treats can be delicious diversions from the same old treats your dog always eats. |
BONES FOR DOGS?
Feeding your dog cooked animal bones can be deadly. Most cooked animal bones are fairly soft and with a bit of chewing from your pooch, they can crack and splinter. This specially happens with cooked chicken bones. Digesting a piece of pointy, sharp bone can lead to a serious trip to the Emergency Vet and could even cause death. The reason why raw bones are safer is the fact that raw bones are much more flexible. This means that they won’t break as your dog chews on them while the cooked ones can splinter and cause big problems. Raw bones on the other hand are soft and can be digested easily. Raw chicken bones are usually perfectly safe for dogs and, what more is, they can even thrive on them! However, that doesn’t mean there’s no risk at all, as they still can present a choking hazard to big dogs.
